Landmark is starting the next film in their classic film series this Friday 8/19. I was really happy when I saw the title would be Cool Hand Luke. Starring the legendary Paul Newman, this one is sure to go over well with with both the male and female audiences. Ladies want him and men want to be him.
I remember watching this film on the old Saturday Matinee on television. Luke Jackson is a cool, gutsy prisoner in a Southern chain gang, who, while refusing to buckle under to authority, keeps escaping and being recaptured. The prisoners admire Luke because, as Dragline explains it, “You’re an original, that’s what you are!” Nevertheless, the camp staff actively works to crush Luke until he finally breaks.
I am part of what most would call the millennial generation. So watching old movies should feel fairly unnatural without high definition and superb effects, however I have always been drawn to films like this. As a former handler of 35MM film, the graininess and imperfections in film really draw me in. Especially here where Luke is put in on rural prison farm. It is hot and dirty and captured perfectly. The look of the film really brings a certain credence to it that might normally be lost with the pristine sets and cameras of the modern age.
I hope you all are excited to see this one on the big screen, I know I am.
